1. Types and usage of conventional hinges

The way cabinet doors are opened is different from room doors. The opening hardware used for room doors is hinges, while cabinet doors use hinges.

During the research and development and design of kitchen cabinets, there are three different conventional process structures due to differences in styles, styles, and processes.

The following figure shows the structural method of cabinet doors and cabinet bodies under normal circumstances. Different structures require hinges with different functions.

Hinge overlay

Schematic diagram of the relationship between hinges and cabinet doors and cabinet bodies under different structures

Hinges was named based on different functions as full overlay, half overlay and inset, which correspond to three different door state to side board: full cover, half cover, and no cover.

The "overlay" mentioned here can be understood as shielding. Which part is shielded? Shield the thickness of the side panel where the hinge is installed in the cabinet.

Full overlay hinges:

Fulloverlay hinges are used when the cabinet doors cover all the side panels.

Half overlay hinges:

Two cabinet doors share a side panel, and each cabinet door covers half of the side panel. Use middle-bend hinges.

Inset hinges:

The cabinet door is embedded in the cabinet. After installation, the cabinet door is flush with the side panel. Large-bend hinges are used when the cabinet door does not cover the side panel.

According to market demand, cabinet panels will be made of different materials, and the thickness of panels of different materials is different. Full cover, half cover, and no cover are all relative to this thickness. So when using panels of different thicknesses, different types of hinges must be used. In fact, EastMax has now developed hinges that are universal for thick and thin doors, and are suitable for panels with thicknesses ranging from 16mm to 28mm.

2. Unconventional hinge technology

Due to the physical space or functional requirements of the cabinet installation site, there are very few cases where the cabinet will form irregular angles and unconventional hinges are required. We can fix these angles at the following angles when designing the product to achieve perfect installation.

It should be noted that the installation range of all the above hinges cannot conflict with other structures in the cabinet. For example, when designing a drawer, both the horizontal and vertical surfaces of the drawer position need to be retracted inward. The horizontal surface (X axis) is retracted inward by more than 50mm, and the vertical surface (Z axis) is retracted inward by more than 70mm. As shown below.

Scaled diagram of the conflict between the drawer and the hinge in the cabinet

If the horizontal surface is not retracted, the drawer will not be able to be pulled out; if the vertical surface is not retracted, the hinge will not be installed, so these two points must be taken into consideration. Other conflicting parts are also designed according to this size idea. In addition to leaving room for the hinge installation, it is also necessary to consider reserving space for screwing when installing the hinge (operation space = screwdriver or electric screwdriver electric rotation + hand activity space). Otherwise, it is futile if only the hinge position cannot screw in the screw.

3. 3D Top End Hinge

What should I do in special cases? For example:

1. What if there is no way to leave 70mm and 50mm space at the hinge position? There is indeed such a situation, such as there is a machine or something else blocking the cabinet body, but it must be installed to open the cabinet door. What should I do?

2. For example, even if you can reserve 70mm and 50m hinge positions, but there is no operating space for screwing the screws (operating space = screwdriver or electric screwdriver + space for hand movement), what should you do if the hinges cannot be installed?

3. In addition, you may have a question if you are careful. The hinges above have requirements for the cabinet door frame. To be precise, the cabinet door frame needs to be wide enough. If it is lower than a certain width, this hinge cannot be installed. What about cabinet doors with small frames? For example, the minimalist and light luxury style cabinet door products currently popular on the market have a large number of small-frame aluminum alloy glass doors. How are they installed?

If there is a problem, someone will solve it, and if there is a demand, someone will meet it!

There is a high-load-bearing 3D Top End Hinge, which only needs two upper and lower hinges to bear a single door of up to 30KG. This hinge has buffering, easy opening, and clever design.

Effect after installing the 3D Top End Hinge

This hinge has an opening angle of 100 degrees and can be used to install cabinet doors with a thickness of 18mm-32mm. The height and width of the cabinet doors are within 2000mm and 600mm respectively. It is enough to cover most sizes of cabinet doors on the market. In fact, the size of the cabinet door is not limited by the hinge, but determined by the tension of the cabinet door frame profile. As long as the profile is good enough and the cabinet door does not deform after assembly, the use of the hinge is not a problem. The only thing that can affect the use of the hinge is the weight of the cabinet door.

In other words, the cabinet door size can be 2050mm*400mm or 1900mm*610mm. As long as the weight does not exceed 20KG per door, there is no problem if the cabinet door does not deform.

4. 3D Concealed hinge

What if you need to design a invisible door? Of course, it is a 3Dconcealed hinge, also known as  a cross hinge.

 Folding hinges of different specifications

This large-sized folding hinge can be used for folding doors, invisible doors, and swing doors in the room. Three hinge can bear 120KG, and 2 can bear 80KG. It is generally used for folding doors and invisible doors. Of course, invisible doors have more professional invisible hinges, but this kind of hinge can also be installed.

Folding hinges have very high quality requirements. Try to choose premium quality. There are many folding hinges on the market that are not up to standard. They will make noises when used, and they are not durable. The doors will sink over time.

In case of 3D concealed hinge, it is better to choice expensive ones. The price of this kind of concealed hinge with good quality will be 2-3 times more expensive than ordinary hinges.
